Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine practice that involves the insertion of hair-thin needles into specific points on the body to stimulate energy flow (Qi) and promote natural healing.

2. What does acupuncture feel like?

Everyone experiences acupuncture differently; most people report little to no pain during acupuncture. The micro-fine needles are about a hair's width, and nothing like the needles you see at the doctor's office. They are sterilized, single-use and filiform.

Common sensations include a dullness or heaviness at the site of insertion, a feeling of warmth, or a pulsing feeling. These sensations are normal and usually dissipate quickly. If a needle causes discomfort, let me know and I can make the proper adjustments. Your comfort is our utmost concern.

3. What conditions can acupuncture treat?

The World Health Organization (WHO) has documented many symptoms, diseases, and conditions that have been shown in controlled clinical trials to be effectively treated with acupuncture.

Acupuncture can be used to address a wide range of conditions, including pain management, stress, anxiety, insomnia, women's health, digestive issues, and more. It is also often used as a complementary therapy for various health concerns.

4. How many sessions do I need?

The number of sessions needed varies depending on the individual and the condition being treated. Acupuncturists typically recommend an initial series of treatments, followed by periodic sessions for maintenance and continued wellness.

5. Is acupuncture safe?

Yes! Licensed acupuncturists are required to undergo extensive education, including detailed study of human anatomy and training in Clean Needle Technique. Sterile, single-use needles are always used to ensure your complete safety.

6. What can I expect during an acupuncture session?

An acupuncture session includes a personalized consultation, needle insertion into specific points, a period of relaxation, and often additional techniques like cupping or moxibustion, depending on your needs.

The first visit includes an in-depth consultation and an acupuncture treatment. I’ll ask you questions that will help me formulate a treatment plan, and during the treatment, I’ll insert thin, sterile needles into the relevant areas, after which you’ll rest for 20-30 minutes. Most people use this time to relax—some even fall asleep. If appropriate, I may use modalities such as cupping, moxibustion and gentle bodywork.

7. How long is an acupuncture session?

Initial consultations are 1.5 hours, while follow-up sessions last an hour, including consultation and treatment time.

8. Do you take insurance?

HMD Wellness is not currently a participant of any insurance network (in other words we are considered ‘Out-of-Network’ providers). If you have out-of-network acupuncture benefits, we can provide you with a “super bill” for services rendered that you can submit to your insurance company. Coverage varies with each policy, but you may be reimbursed through your out-of-network coverage.

9. What is your cancellation and lateness policy?

We have a 24-hr cancellation policy. Patients who provide less than 24 hours notice will be charged for 50% of the visit. Patients who do not show up to their appointment will be charged the full appointment fee.

Lateness happens! I try my best to accommodate patients that are running up to 15 minutes late, though I will have to shorten the treatment. If you are more than 15 minutes late, I cannot guarantee that I'll be able to treat you. Please contact me to let me know if you are running behind schedule.

10. Can I combine acupuncture with other therapies?

Yes! Acupuncture can be safely combined with other conventional or complementary therapies like massage, physical therapy, and chiropractic to enhance overall wellness.

11. What should I wear to an acupuncture session?

Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the areas where needles will be inserted. Drapes will also always be available and offered for the patient's comfort.

13. How can I prepare for my first acupuncture session?

Before your session, eat a light meal, stay hydrated, and arrive with any questions or concerns you'd like to discuss with your acupuncturist.
